Gambling advertising in WSC
In our 2018 readers’ survey (published in WSC 378) we asked what you liked least about WSC. Several mentioned the presence of advertisements from betting companies, although it is over a year since we published any. We had not made a conscious choice to turn them down, but have decided to do so in the future, in the print edition and online. While we’re not opposed to gambling in principle – survey responses suggest that around half of WSC readers place bets occasionally – the industry is an increasingly influential presence in football. We can’t comment on these deepening ties while taking money from the objects of the criticism.
