The third day of the WSC advent calendar and we’ve got three Kings for you.

The first is taken from WSC 187, September 2002. Haydyn Parry examined what Gillingham would do without their leading striker, Marlon King, who had just lost his appeal against a conviction for stolen goods which meant he would spend 18 months in prison.

The second is Harry Pearson on the King’s Road, so synonymous with Chelsea FC, in WSC 166, December 2000.

The third is this photo of the Greene King stadium, alternatively called De Montfort Park, home to Hinckley United of the Conference North. This 4,329-capacity stadium was opened in March 2005 and its record attendance is 3,411 – achieved against Leicester City in a pre-season friendly in July 2012.

When Bayern Munich signed Breno Vinícius Borges for €12.3 million (£9.6m) in December 2007, they appeared to have landed a major coup. The 18-year-old central defender had just been voted “Discovery of the Year” by journalists after helping São Paulo FC to become Brazilian champions. Already an Under-20 international, Breno had been nominated captain of Brazil’s 2008 Olympic team by national coach Dunga.

One Belgrade club has floundered since the assassination of their infamous and highly feared owner in 2000. Richard Mills reports

Earlier this year Serbian pop singer Svetlana “Ceca” Ražnatović was finally charged with embezzlement over the sale of footballers and the illegal possession of firearms. These charges date back nearly ten years and relate to transfers from Obilić Belgrade Football Club. Ceca took over the running of Obilić when her husband Željko “Arkan” Ražnatović was assassinated in 2000 after an extraordinary life which included bank robberies, prison breaks, commanding a paramilitary organisation and indictment for war crimes. In death Arkan continues to be a legendary figure among Serbian nationalists, but the plight of his football club has been less well documented.

The fantastically wealthy foreign club owner was until recently unknown in Spain, where clubs have generally either been member-owned, dominated by local businessmen or, most commonly, a mixture of both. Then, last June, Qatar’s Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al-Thani bought Málaga, promised to sign at least five new players immediately, announced plans for a new 65,000-seat stadium and predicted Champions League glory within a few seasons.
