I first saw it one Saturday as I walked down the side of the Sittingbourne pitch. It was best described as a half-Fellaini: an attempt at an afro curtailed by an over-zealous barber. It sat atop the head of the kid deputising for our regular centre-back, absent for the unlikely reason of being under arrest on a charge of attempted murder. Though a tall lad, he looked too young to buy a drink.

An FA Cup final between two teams outside the “Big Four” was a blessing

The fact that Portsmouth are to embark on their first ever season in Europe is an indication of one of the enduring strengths of the English league. Nowhere else in Europe are there teams with as many supporters who are yet to qualify for one of UEFA’s competitions. Portsmouth’s FA Cup victory still leaves several well supported clubs who are yet to play in Europe, notably Sheffield United, Charlton and Crystal Palace – although the last-named finished third in 1991 and would have done so but for the Heysel ban.

Dear WSC
I’m sure I’m not the only Wednesday fan disappointed that the recent takeover was unsuccessful. However, whatever the rights and wrongs, our initial disappointment was lessened when we found out that would-be buyer Paul Gregg was a leisure magnate rather than the purveyor of quality pastries to our high streets. I was quite looking forward to Leon Clarke puffing up and down our newly laid pitch with “Steak Bake” emblazoned across his ample midriff.
