Manchester United are reportedly closing in on the £100 million signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus. They wouldn't have to pay such huge sums of money if more players came through their academy instead. Oh, hold on...

ASFFish150Badge of the week ~ ASF Andrézieux-Bouthéon, France
“The fish in the castle” is a very old French phrase. If you said to someone French “It was very much the fish in the castle”, they would instantly know what you meant. The trick is, however, for you to know what you meant.

It is rather a niche concept and difficult to translate into English, but, for example, if you imagine that you were at your sister-in-law’s house but it is her second, holiday home and you are there with your new girlfriend, boyfriend or extra-marital lover, and the occasional window-cleaner calls for payment while your sister-in-law is out, and your boyfriend, girlfriend or extra-marital lover answers the door while you are in the bathroom, that is “the fish in the castle”.

As a parallel to aid understanding, Jack Wilshire was “fish in the castle” in his midfield role in the second half against Iceland. Confusingly, “Fish in the Castle” is also a popular seafood restaurant in Rouen. But not very confusingly if you don’t go to Rouen much. ASF Andrezieux-Boutheon use the Fish in the Castle image on their club crest because they were very much the Fish in the Castle between 1947 and 1952. They aren’t now, though, not since they got a Family Enclosure. Cameron Carter
