Alan Pardew has invited England rugby union coach Eddie Jones to training in order to give his Crystal Palace team a “little bit of a lift”. We look forward to seeing Pardew return the favour ahead of next year's Six Nations.

Blue150Badge of the week ~ Blue Waters FC, Namibia
This is just too informal isn’t it? “Up the Birds”? There are so many off-the-peg great-sounding Latin mottos to choose from as well – Nil Satis Nisi Optimum, Arte Et Labore, Cave Canum, Quo Vadis to name but a few. And yet Blue Waters have eschewed thousands of these elegantly meaningless phrases for a spit-and-sawdust beerhall bellow. There is no inspirational message here, no Mission Statement.

Looking at this club motto we don’t know if the club achieve greatness through unity, if they prize truth highly, or even if they are quite noisy during frottage. All that we can ascertain of their core spirit, their unifying identity, is “Up The Birds”. Perhaps this is an ironic smokescreen to shield a complex and enigmatic institution that does not invite public scrutiny. Come to think of it, the motto of the Skull & Bones Society is also “Up The Birds”. Cameron Carter
