Pioneers of the women’s game since 1969, the Belles were dominant in the 1980s but have had mixed fortunes in the professional era. They merged with Doncaster Rovers in 2007 but were scandalously demoted in favour of Manchester City when the Women’s Super League was created in 2011. They are back in the top flight as the summer season kicks off. The Belles played reigning champions Chelsea twice in a week at the Keepmoat, losing 4-1 in the Cup game pictured in front of 525 fans and by the same score on the first day of the WSL season.
