From WSC 326, April 2014

icon scotlanddreams24 June ~ When the groups were drawn for this World Cup the majority of people gave Costa Rica no chance of progressing in a group also containing Uruguay, Italy and England. However, they have already qualified, having won their first two games 3-1 and 1-0. Up next are England, who are already out. There is now no chance of the Central Americans being seen as makeweights by England, but they wouldn't be the first home nation to do so. In 1990 Costa Rica's first-ever World Cup game was a 1-0 victory over Scotland, whose press even ran the headline Warning: Costa Rica beatable before the match, and went on to finish second in the group. In WSC 326, April 2014, Archie MacGregor looked back at that match, and how even afterwards Costa Rica were shrugged off.
