Living in a dream world: The agonising decisions of “fantasy” football

361 Fantasy

It may have a misleading name but fantasy football can be an addictive hobby, with complex selection issues coming to dominate your thinking

Badge of the week ~ Rebels FC, British Virgin Islands

Rebels150aBadge of the week ~ Rebels FC, British Virgin Islands
There are some things one’s mind jolts to instantly on hearing the word “rebel”. One is of course, Marlon Brando in The Wild One. If I recall the dialogue correctly: Young lady: “What are you rebelling against Johnny?” Marlon Brando: “What’ve you got?” Young lady: “Chlamydia.” Marlon Brando: “I’m rebelling against chlamydia.”

Gritted teeth

wsc316Seb Patrick mantains that it is becoming harder to admire or support a player who has lots of skill but repeatedly damages his club’s image

It’s difficult not to imagine that Luis Suárez has a “goodwill meter” that he lets fill up to a certain point before jettisoning all of it in one go. Having arrived in England fresh from serving a ban for biting PSV’s Otman Bakkal – and with his part in Ghana’s exit from the 2010 World Cup still fresh in the memory – it took a quick adjustment to English football for people to start thinking maybe he wasn’t so bad after all.

The three Kings ~ player, road and stadium

The third day of the WSC advent calendar and we’ve got three Kings for you.

wsc187The first is taken from WSC 187, September 2002. Haydyn Parry examined what Gillingham would do without their leading striker, Marlon King, who had just lost his appeal against a conviction for stolen goods which meant he would spend 18 months in prison.

wsc166The second is Harry Pearson on the King’s Road, so synonymous with Chelsea FC, in WSC 166, December 2000.

The third is this photo of the Greene King stadium, alternatively called De Montfort Park, home to Hinckley United of the Conference North. This 4,329-capacity stadium was opened in March 2005 and its record attendance is 3,411 – achieved against Leicester City in a pre-season friendly in July 2012.

Coventry City 1 Birmingham City 1

wsc303Apparently Coventry City only had to win their five remaining home games to save themselves from relegation to League One, but that proved to be easier said than done, writes Ed Wilson

Forget fancy notions of skill and tactics. Relegation battles, the professionals tell us, are all about belief. Nobody – not the manager, players or supporters – believes Coventry can stay up more than the psychotically optimistic radio presenter I am listening to on the way to today’s game. For him, survival is almost guaranteed. “All we have to do,” he insists, “is win our remaining five home games.” He is not deflated by the knowledge they have managed only seven victories all season. They are due a change of fortune. You begin to wonder what it would take to undermine his chirpiness. His wife could ask for a divorce during Donna and Althea’s Uptown Top Ranking and he would be back on air seconds later, joshing his way through the traffic and travel.
