Episode 29: Player-managers, shipwrecked squads and tea lady aggro

Energised by thoughts of Fray Bentos pies and corned beef, magazine editor Andy Lyons, writer Harry Pearson and host Daniel Gray discuss player-managers from Howard Kendall to Edgar Davids via tea lady aggro. Tributes to Colin Bell lead to a discussion of famous player combinations including Hibs’ Famous Five, the Blonde Arrow and the Galloping Major, and a £50,000 forward line shipwrecked off the coast of Spain. There is a delve inside the pages of issue 406 of WSC magazine, Record Breakers takes us to Wuppertal, Lokeren and Rome, and Dan is joined by Beesotted co-editor Billy Grant to talk all things Brentford.

Matters of opinion

On Sky TV, Andy Gray has several times passed his firm verdict on the 2010 World Cup – “disappointing”. Well, it wasn’t on Sky, of course. The WSC readership’s view, asked for in three words or fewer in our post-tournament survey, was slightly more nuanced, as you would hope, “strangely unfulfilling”, “dramatic but mediocre”, “curate’s egg – almost”. There was a general feeling of being slightly underwhelmed. “Meh” wrote several but our favourites were “team-work trumps celebrity” and “tippy-tappy tedium”.
