30 September ~ The book reviews from the current issue of WSC are online now. There's the story of Highbury legend Alex James, who got round the maximum wage by taking a £250-a-year job as a "sports demonstrator" at Selfridges on signing for Arsenal in 1929. Will You Manage? looks at what it takes to be a successful football manager and provides "entertainment rather than enlightenment". Or how about an Aberdeen fan's memoirs of anti-social Scottish football in the 1970s and 80s, "a terrified kid in the face of a mature and unaccountable violence", in On Fire With Fergie? Finally, a "biography" of Liverpool Football Club "attacks the periods leading up to and between the wars with gusto", and a "desire to continually place the club's development with the socio-economic context of the city".
