THE HALF DECENT FOOTBALL MAGAZINE

{mosimage} 15 June ~ Paddy Power’s James Ellis takes a look at the betting opportunities in Group G, which starts this afternoon

The World Cup is truly underway but after all the hype of last week many teams have been lacking in flair and sparkle so far – Germany aside. Today the attention turns to Group G, the obligatory Group of Death. North Korea make up the group but Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast will all view their matches against the Koreans as the opportunity to improve their goal difference  – this or goals scored could decide the group, such is the talent in those three teams. However three into two doesn’t go so one will be going home with the North Koreans.

Paddy Power are that hopeful that today will be a goal fest that should the Portugal v Ivory Coast game end 0-0 they’ll refund losing bets on the game. Surely with Cristiano Ronaldo and Didier Drogba this game can’t end in a stalemate but should the unthinkable happen Paddy Power will refund all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast bets on the match.

If there is one player in this World Cup who loves the limelight it’s Ronaldo so you can be sure he’ll try to turn it on this afternoon and with his unique free-kick technique coupled with the controversial ball we could be in for some spectacular shooting from distance. He leads the First Scorer market as a 9/2 chance and is bound to be well supported. Drogba has been cleared by FIFA to play with a protective cast on his arm so 11/2 on him scoring first could be too good to turn down.

First scorer
9/2 Ronaldo
11/2 Drogba
6/1 Liedson
7/1 Kalou
9/1 Simao
18/1 Deco
25/1 Eboue

Tonight’s game sees Brazil start their World Cup campaign against North Korea; this could end up being a cricket score if Brazil turn on the style. However Dunga’s Brazil are more substance over style so don’t be surprised if there is more strategy than stepover. There is no value backing them at 1/9 to win this so look at the handicap where they are Evens at -2 goals.

Kaka is criticised in Madrid for reserving his best performances for Brazil so here’s hoping that he turns on the style today – he’s 9/2 for the opening goal and 11/10 to score at anytime. The Correct Score betting suggests that Paddy Power are expecting goals because a 1-0 Brazil win is 6/1 where as 2-0 is shorter at 9/2. There will be plenty of optimists backing bigger scorelines too – maybe they can beat Germany’s 4-0 win with a 5-0 over the North Koreans? That pays at 11/1.

Correct score
6/1 Brazil 1-0
9/2 Brazil 2-0
11/1 Brazil 2-1
5/1 Brazil 3-0
12/1 Brazil 3-1
13/2 Brazil 4-0
11/1 Brazil 5-0

I'd prefer to bet on the sex of Caster Semanya. Classy tie-in, WSC.

The plugs have been creeping into the Weekly Howl too as thinly disguised as articles. Bad form.

They're not disguised at all - we have a commerical arrangement with Paddy Power. This piece is cleary attributed to a Paddy Power employee. We're hardly doing anything underhand. You have the choice whether to Read more or not.

And here's something else I've got the choice about.

Whether to renew my subscription when it lapses in August, consider whether you need my money if you've got this "commercial arrangement" with a bookmaker who finds it funny to offer bets on whether the US President will see a full term, on the sex of an international athlete, and finds it funny to feature television advertisements where cats are kicked into trees.

Rest assured, a letter from the "real World" will be winging its way to your letters page, it will outline my objections to deciding Paddy Power's money is more important than mine, it will offer you the opportunity to decide from where you want to derive your income.

Cats kicked into trees you say? They've gone up in my estimation, if you ask me.
