7 February ~ Chelsea welcome Manchester United to Stamford Bridge today with both teams having difficult seasons so far. In March 1969 Chelsea were fifth in Division One, while Manchester United were struggling down in 17th having missed out on the title to Manchester City the previous season. What ensued was a thrilling game of football on an extremely muddy pitch.
Dave Webb opened the scoring for the hosts after just 60 seconds, turning in from a corner after United keeper Alex Stepney spilled an initial shot. Despite flashes of skill from George Best, just before the half-hour mark Ian Hutchinson made it 2-0, before a cross evaded Chelsea’s defence and Steve James pulled a goal back for the visitors. Eleven minutes into the second half Bobby Tambling seemingly put the game beyond United, breaking away to score his team’s third. While Denis Law did pull another back from the penalty spot, the match finished 3-2.
Chelsea stayed in fifth place for the remainder of the season, while Manchester United won their next game 8-1 against QPR and eventually dragged themselves up to 11th.
