THE HALF DECENT FOOTBALL MAGAZINE

31 January ~ It’s the Milan derby tonight as inconsistent AC, sixth in Serie A, face rivals Inter, whose title challenge has stuttered over recent weeks. When this derby took place in November 1989 it was between the reigning champions of Italy (Inter) and Europe (AC Milan). It was the European champions who came out on top. Marco van Basten, the division’s top scorer that season, opened the scoring before Diego Fuser and Daniele Massaro sealed the win.

A few months later Inter got revenge, winning the return 3-1, however neither club could stop Napoli winning the title – AC Milan were runners-up, Inter third. At least AC Milan could console themselves with a second European Cup in a row, when they beat Benfica 1-0 in Vienna.
