THE HALF DECENT FOOTBALL MAGAZINE

26 April ~ Second-place Arsenal welcome Premier League leaders Chelsea today knowing that even a win is unlikely to be enough to halt their rivals’ march to the title. In 1996 both teams had eyes on winning the league, though neither proved strong enough in the end. And early-season encounter at Highbury did provide an exciting and memorable match though. Arsenal were in limbo after the sacking of Bruce Rioch. The relatively unknown Arsène Wenger would soon take over but Pat Rice was in charge for this game, and he saw his team come from 2-0 down to lead 3-2, before a last-minute Dennis Wise goal meant it ended level. Arsenal finished third but won the Double under Wenger the following season, while Chelsea were sixth.
