THE HALF DECENT FOOTBALL MAGAZINE

22 February ~ Southampton welcome Liverpool to St Mary’s today with both clubs chasing a Champions League spot. Early in the 1989-90 season league leaders Liverpool arrived on the south coast unbeaten but left having been thrashed by a Saints team containing Matt Le Tissier, Paul Rideout, Rod Wallace, Tim Flowers and a young Alan Shearer. The 4-1 victory moved Southampton up to third but they eventually finished seventh – Liverpool won the League by nine points, their last title to date.
