THE HALF DECENT FOOTBALL MAGAZINE

21 December ~ When thinking of matches between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield, much of the focus is on the climax of the 1988-89 season, when the away side won 2-0 and took the League title back to London. However, exactly six months later the two teams were playing again. This time Arsenal were leading the division, level on points with Aston Villa and Chelsea, while Liverpool were three points behind. Excellent long-range goals from Steve McMahon and John Barnes won it for Liverpool, with Alan Smith getting a scrappy consolation goal. The result put Liverpool top on goal difference and they went on the regain the title, with Arsenal finishing fourth.
