13 June ~ Mexico have only ever reached as far as the quarter-finals of the World Cup and both times they managed it were when they were also the hosts – 1970 and 1986. In the latter their opening match was against Belgium in front of a 110,000 crowd at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Fernando Quirarte and then Hugo Sánchez put the hosts 2-0 up before a goalkeeping error allowed Erwin Vandenbergh to pull a goal back. However Mexico held on for the win, before going on to lose to West Germany on penalties in the quarter-final.
