THE HALF DECENT FOOTBALL MAGAZINE

27 May ~ England host Peru tonight in their final game at Wembley before departing for Miami and then on to the World Cup. The two nations have only ever met twice before, both in Peru. In May 1959 Walter Winterbottom took a team including Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Armfield, Billy Wright and Johnny Haynes to a match in Lima which ended in a 4-1 defeat in front of 50,306. Jimmy Greaves scored England's goal but a hat-trick by future Barcelona and Fiorentina striker Juan Seminario, plus one goal from Juan Joya, earned victory for the hosts. In the second match, played in the build-up to the 1962 World Cup, England got their revenge – Greaves scored a hat-trick and Ron Flowers a penalty as they won 4-0.
