Press never warmed to new Man Utd manager

icon vangaal20 May ~ Louis van Gaal has been announced as the new manager of Manchester United, where he will begin after overseeing Holland's World Cup campaign. The Dutch coach comes with a fearsome reputation built over years of success, including two titles with Barcelona between 1997 and 2000. However his lack of integration at the club meant he was never well liked in Spain, where they nicknamed him the "poisoned dwarf". Despite this Van Gaal returned to Catalonia in 2002, where he controversially transferred Rivaldo to AC Milan. Phil Ball explored Van Gaal's methods and time at Barcelona in WSC 187.
