icons abroad2 January ~ In August 1949 the Nigeria national team became to first ever to leave West Africa, when they embarked on a nine-match, five-week tour of England. They played against the country's top amateur teams, starting with a 5-2 victory over Marine Crosby in Liverpool that was watched by a crowd of around 7,000. Footage on the Colonial Film site shows that match, as well as their 1-0 defeat to Dulwich Hamlet.
