26 December ~ In the first Boxing Day after the creation of the Premier League, Manchester United came back from a 3-0 down against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. David Hirst, Mark Bright and John Sheridan scored for the Owls, but Brian McClair – twice – and Eric Cantona managed to secure a point in the last 25 minutes. United were five points behind Norwich City at this stage but eventually won the first Premier League title by ten points, ahead of Aston Villa. Wednesday finished seventh and lost both cup finals to Arsenal.
