THE HALF DECENT FOOTBALL MAGAZINE

11 October ~ Hungary play Holland tonight needing of the three points to keep their chances of getting a spot in Brazil next summer. It seems unlikely but the qualifiers for Mexico 86 might be a good inspiration to the Magyars. They beat Holland 2-1 in Rotterdam in October 1984 with goals by Lajos Detari and Marton Esterhazy, and eventually secured a place at the World Cup by topping their group. It's the last major tournament reached by the Hungarian team to this day, while the Oranje have only missed one of the last 14.
