THE HALF DECENT FOOTBALL MAGAZINE

5 April ~ Saturday is the 17th anniversary of the inaugural fixture in MLS. Initially containing ten clubs, the division was set up by the US Soccer Federation to meet a condition set by FIFA, who awarded them the 1994 World Cup in an attempt to prompt growth in the sport in that nation. San Jose Clash beat DC United courtesy of a late Eric Wynalda strike which was to be voted goal of the season, while DC went on to win the first MLS title with an extra-time victory over LA Galaxy. Initially drawn games were decided by penalties and each half ended when a countdown clock which paused for stoppages in play reached zero.
