How the media uses fans' enthusiasm

As the new season draws closer the level of transfer gossip flying around intensifies. Newspapers fill their pages and websites with rumour regularly presented as fact. Often these stories have no quotes to give them a foundation. If they do they are normally unattributed. The rise of the internet and Twitter has only served to heighten the competition, with many manipulating search engines to draw in the page views.
