21 February ~ The book reviews from WSC 300 are online now. Last month we focused on biographies of four very different characters. Dominic Matteo's In My Defence is not a run of the mill football autobiography. Although he never fulfilled much of his promise, Matteo is remembered fondly as one of the game's characters. Norman "Black Jake" Uprichard tells the story of a player from a bygone age, when a footballer could be running a pub and playing non-League football only two years after facing Alfredo di Stéfano at the Bernabéu. There's Only One Dixie Deans recounts the life of the Celtic striker John Deans, who is remembered unfairly as the player who first missed a penalty in a shoot-out. And Joe Fagan's biography tells the story of an ordinary man who did an extraordinary job at Liverpool.
