8 July ~ Today we look back to a piece by Barney Ronay first published in WSC 190. The promising young forward Wayne Rooney was attracting hyperbolic praise in the media even before this goal against Arsenal. In 2002 Rooney was one of many bright young things from whom much was expected. He has since proved himself worthy of the high praise, but time has not been as kind to other precocious talents like Jermaine Pennant, Jamie McMaster and Luke Shields
