25 October ~ We've just updated our book review section. Gary Lineker attempts an "inside account of the 2010 World Cup", but unfortunately this is a task that requires "a very special literary talent, not an ex-goal poacher". Animals! is an account of England v Argentina, with "just the right balance of football detail": "Did you know that four Brown brothers played for Argentina against Brazil in 1908?" Or there's MLS and the benefits of a "level of financial enterprise the rest of the world has never needed to call on, or at least not been able to". Finally, Promised Land draws telling paralells between the city of Leeds and its football club: "There is a sense of a city, a team, in the debilitating grip of the fatalism and morbid superstition which beset Revie in his later years, when, to paraphrase Brian Clough, he had his players believing in everything but themselves."
