Nils Petersen might have missed the decisive penalty in the Olympic football final, but there was gold for Bundesliga players in one of the few other Olympic sports that Brazilians actually care about. German beach volleyball duo Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst silenced the Copacabana crowd by convincingly disposing home opponents in both semi-final and final. They are surely not the only fans to use World Cups as a marker of time. I’ve been watching since 1974, and each event prompts me not only to stick up a wallchart and forecast the scores, but also to reflect on where I was last time around, or maybe 20 years ago. That will all change for the next two cycles.” Buy here to read the full article
