Much has been made of Rinus Michels, Johan Cruyff and Willem van Hanegem, but Dutch football only really took off when Ernst Bouwes got involved in the spring of 1970. He may have been only six at the time, but since he started following football on radio and TV, the country has taken almost every trophy in international football. A coincidence? Maybe. Anyway, he started writing for WSC in 2001, and has since provided columns for ESPN’s Soccernet and the Japanese glossy World Soccer Digest.
