TOPIC: Flame out

Right, I've been embarassed by this thread title for long enough. Bastards chosing this thread, intended ironically, as the main Olympics discussion thread. Anyway, hope you found it...

These pre-opening cermony bits are a little weird, aren't they? Somehow part and yet not part of the event.

Anyway a Women's football game is going on and another two are about to kick-off. GB have been well on top against New Zealand in the first action, but have been the opposite of icy cool when presented with opportunities. Maybe because the best chances keep falling to defenders or converted defenders.

I guess the French women's team wasn't told about the Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey thing.

2-0 over the US in the first 15 minutes.

We may have to re-name the fried potatoes again.

Wambach gets one back for the US.

And now it is tied.

First one to 21 wins.

This is the start of the Olympics for me. I mean, the ceremony is always a big pile of meaningless toss. But now, we've got some actual sport on, it's on - and a cracker at Hampden by the looks

3-2 to the USA, now. Looks like I missed out by watching that other lot.

Great strike from Carli Lloyd. Assist from my favorite player, Megan Rapinoe.

A 4-2-nate win for the U.S. women, by the looks of things. (Sorry.)

Anyway, I have to figure out how to stream the games. I cut my cable a few months ago. I was going to look into it Friday afternoon, but didn't realize some events were starting before the Opening Ceremonies.

Looking forward to men's and women's football, swimming, track and field, and the goofy sports I never pay any attention to except during the Olympics, like table tennis. (Which is actually pretty mesmerizing and amazing to watch at this level. I probably would watch it more if it were on.)

Also, isn't Mitt Romney's ballet horse in these Olympic Games?

Rafalca!

I'm going to be rooting hard for Rafalca during these games. Not only because she's on Team USA, but also because the more the American public associates Romney with fancy rich-people dancing horses, the better.

Bunch of good goals so far. As well as Lloyd, there was another good strike from range from Thinney (aided by an unusual error from Solo), and two decent free-kicks from Houghton and Francelle. However, I think Kawasumi's opener for Japan is the best so far today. Three consecutive lovely pieces of play, the outside of the foot lift by Sawa to find Ono, Ono's strength to hold the defender off and then her perfectly weighted and timed sole-of-the-boot drag-back to set Kawasumi in, and then Kawasumi not panicking but instead opening her body up so she can curl the ball into the top corner. Tab three on this stream for a visual representation of that description (probably only works in Britain).

Kick-off to DPRK - Colombia now half an hour late, reportedly because DPRK are unhappy at the South Korean flag having been flown while the team lists were being read out. Oooops.

Now announcing the teams in the stadium, which suggests progress... okay, maybe not... announcing only the DPRK and not Colombia.

Kick off will be at 20:50, ie an hour and five minutes late.

Dang, that is an embarassing mistake. Not what was needed. How many spectators have bothered staying? It didn't look that busy anyway...

In more upbeat news, my performance of the day award goes to Sue Smith's hairdresser. It's a tough enough gig at the best of times, but he has really upped his game today.

They shouldn't have put Neil Doncaster and Stewart Regan in charge of the flags.
