The Spurs have unveiled an alternate uniform:

That's a lotta gray.

Nope. Still no joy.

What's the extension of the file? If it's something other than .jpg or .gif, that could be a problem.

20 years later, and the international game isn't what I hoped it was.

I am happy that the skill level has progressed so much farther than I could imagine, but I was hoping for fan support and fans-going-ballistic at such a much higher level than what I hoped.

It's about 20% of what I was hoping regarding fan chants, flag waving, passion, etc.

Steve Blake will miss the Lakers camp because he was walking around Manhattan Beach barefoot and he stepped on a "no backing up" tire spike. And just thinking of doing that makes me want to die.

I'm not sure if this accessible to non-subscribers, so apologies if not:

Is coaching experience associated with effective use of timeouts in basketball?

It's basically a statistical analysis of timeouts in basketball showing that they essentially make no significant difference to the outcome of a game.

They then looked at how the effectiveness of timeouts correlated with the experience of the coach making the calls - and found that more experienced coaches actually have negative timeout factors (ie their teams tended to do worse in the period immediately following a timeout). By contrast, less experienced coaches have slightly positive timeout factors.

They also tested for an association between the effectiveness of timeouts and payroll, and found none.

It's all quite geeky stuff, I suppose, but I found it interesting even as a non-basketball fan.

It doesn't seem to be firewalled, and is in fact interesting.

I'd be interested to see what results they got from college basketball, as my guess is that timeouts are more "effective" with less jaded (and experienced) players. It would also be interesting to see if the "timeout factor" was more positive during a coach's first couple of seasons with a given pro team, as the common wisdom is that NBA players eventually "tune out" even the most successful coaches.

Thanks, I'll have to read that. I wonder if the basketball statistic heads (and there is a big statistical movement in basketball) have heard of this. Haven't seen it mentioned by the basketball people I follow on Twitter.

Take Rafa Benitez in the Liverpool-AssCrack Milan game.

Halftime, he moves Gerrard from Left D to Center Mid.

Had he had timeouts, he would've probably made that move earlier.

Great coaches can visualize their players skill sets, and what they can do in the chemistry of matching up against the other team's skill set. This player can hit a 3 against that player, this player can shut down that other player, etc.

Interesting. Perhaps that explains Phil Jackson's unwillingness to call timeouts, the Zen Master seemingly ahead of the curve on this one.

Reportedly Rasheed Wallace is coming out of retirement to sign for the Knicks - its hard to believe he will make that much of an impact.

I'd say that knowing when to change something up, and knowing the exact moment when another team would not be able to make an adjustment to it is quite important. Seeing the amount of TOs at the 3 minute mark comes to mind. How many times do you see a team hit 3 buckets in a row to seal it at that point ?

<3 U KOBE

dimemag.com/2012/10/kobe-bryant-tries-to...kobe-est-quote-ever/

Here’s what Bryant told reporters of a phone conversation he had the other night with A-Rod – he of a .143 in the ALCS and .130 with no RBI in the entire playoffs:

“We spoke a couple of days ago,” Bryant said of Rodriguez, whom he befriended on the set of a commercial a few years ago. “You can only control what you can control. You go out there and do the best job you can. If they take you out of the lineup, it’s really on you to be a good teammate and support the other guys, which he’s good about doing.”

But that’s not exactly what Bryant said when he called Rodriguez, who was benched for Game 3 on Tuesday night because he’s hit .143 in the ALCS and .130 in the playoffs with no RBIs.

No, that conversation went more like this:

“I just say to him, ‘You’re Alex Rodriguez. You’re A-Rod. You’re one of the best to ever do it,’” Bryant said. “I think sometimes he kind of forgets that and wants to try to do the right thing all the time. Which is the right team attitude to have. But other times you really have to put your head down and say, ‘Hell with it’ and just do your thing.

“Hopefully the next game they’ll kind of give him a chance, maybe put him back at third and let him respond to the pressure, which I think he’ll do.”

And then this gem:

“We’re different. But you’re talking about, ‘He’s one of the best to ever play.’ I think really the difference is, sometimes he forgets he’s the best. … Where, I don’t.”

The titles the Lakers won in Minnesota either shouldn't be there at all or be in sky blue.

Good call.

A nice list of reasons to look forward to the season:

Jeremy Evans of the Jazz with the highlight of the preseason. It's not often you see the same guy get posterized twice at both ends of the floor on the same play. My condolences to Ronny Turiaf.

Credit to Turiaf for at least trying to get back.

Not many guys would have bothered in that situation.
