TOPIC: Smiths re-starting something they couldn't finish?

posted 04-10-2012 08:51
The reunion rumours seem particularly strong this time.

"The Smiths to reunite?" is the "Beatles to reunite?" for the 80's generation. "Beatles to reunite?" rumours even after Lennon's death were constant and so it appears with the Smiths.

Marr and Morrissey in particular despise Mike Joyce after the court case a few years back. Morrissey is renowned for holding grudges.

Even if there was a 3/4 Smiths reunion in the possible offing I hope to God it doesn't happen. Bands split for a reason, they've lost their raison d'etre and the only reason they reunite is for money, not because they have unfinished business or artistic statements to make.

Reunion gigs are merely cash cows based on sentiment and devoid of the magic and meaning which made bands famous and loved in the first place. The Pixies at least were up front about this for their reunion tour and although I was the world's biggest Pixies fan in the day, I didn't bother going to see them during their reunion gigs.

Beware,I bear more grudges

People scoffed at the prospect of a Stone Roses re-union, but despite the fact that Ian Brown's weak voice has got even weaker, their recent shows were a triumph (at least I thought so when I saw them at V)

Good post Geoff, agree with the jist, but sometimes band members are really genuinely excited to revisit their old repertoire, reconnect with their audiences and relive the tour experience. whether or not they sill have it is another issue, but often their aging fans won`t care.

Probably a bad idea, but then again the Go-Betweens reunited and produced three more wonderful albums. But for every Go-Betweens there are dozens of stiff little fingers and echoing bunnymen touring around and trawling through the old hits, and sad old bastards like me there to watch then.

That was a very uncomfortable interview.

I've never heard of Stephen Colbert before, but I honestly thought Morrissey enjoyed that interview, especially the bit when he looked down the camera.
Also, when he was questioned about why there was to be no meat in the tv studio, at least the question was asked, in so much as there wasn't any areas which where no-go.
I remember in the early 90s, Morrissey moved to LA because he management thought he needed a suntan and put on a bit of weight (there was also a picture of him in the NME sunbathing!)
Maybe this time around, his management has told him to show a more humorous side.

I thought the Old Dear played it well. He obviously knew what he was getting into and what the Colbert character was all about.

Nice opinion to have when you're old enough to be a fan of the band in their original incarnation.

@ Serge/RobW.
Really? To me he looked completely out of his depth. At times he was speechless, and I wasn't sure if he was going to lose it. I've watched it twice, and my thoughts were - Morrissey has little aptitude for humor, and he's possibly not very bright. I thought it was telling when Colbert said something along the lines of, "Are you still going to perform for us even after this interview?" I think he knew how uncomfortable it had been, and that Morrissey didn't really get the show format. He was possibly not well briefed by his publicist.

Oh and Christ, what was that fucking awful song about how people are all the same? Didn't he promise a couple of years back to stop making records?

I was at a Wedding Present gig two weeks ago, well worth it. I was the youngest person there I think...

Sisters of Mercy on the other hand, are fucking rubbish. But I could discern that from Youtube and didn't bother to go.

It's great being able to check out recent gigs on Youtube before making a decision. Similarly, I won't be going to the Happy Mondays. 35 quid to watch Shaun Ryder stumble about pissed.

i went to see the pixies in lisbon with steveeeee during euro 2004 - they were great.

i got so excited that my blood sugar collapsed and it very nearly happened that the last sound i heard on this earth was the voice of lenny kravitz, who was on after the pixies - luckily steveeee was there to save my life.

I'd like to hear them play their old songs.

What on earth is the problem with that?

Well I was watching it on my phone on the bus home. I'll give it another viewing properly later. I think the problem is that Moz just doesn't have anything interesting to say anymore, either in interviews or musically, though I will keep my fingers crossed.

Colbert was hilarious, gushing about the royals. All Ass-flower Spokesman for a Generation could come up with was: "C'mon, the royals are really awful, y'know."

I suspect ass-flower Morrissey would rather despise his middle-aged self.
