TOPIC: Pitbull

What is the point of him?

He's an awful rapper, the type who'd struggle to get a gig as an MC in an Ayia Napa back-street bar. His lyrics are terrible, meaningless bumf. On top of all that, he's bald and out of shape but he's always doing duets with big names from the block/hood whatever.

Never has the street been represented by such a charlatan. I can only assume he is the gateway between the music industry and a particularly fine supply of cocaine, because nothing else explains his exposure and fame.

You are quite right, and yet Pitbull is hip pop's Bach and Mozart rolled into one when compared to autotuned rapping delight that is Drake.

I still stand by what I wrote on the Lana Del Rey thread a few months ago:

I hate that Pitbull's act has gotten to the point that he's doing 80 different soda commercials, but he had some real good tracks with the Yin-Yang Twins over the past decade. If your introduction to him now is doing that laugh-talk over tracks, you must wonder how the fuck he has a career.

But he'll always have "Shake."

Poder Magazine, a Hispanic Business magazine, had a pretty interesting article. He came from Cuba on an airlift, he had a real rough life growing up in 1980s Miami, and basically had to figure out some way to make money other than selling white powder.

“That’s where people got me fucked up. I’m not an artist, I’m a businessman,” says Perez. “The way I think of records is: ‘OK you have a great record. But what if we take that record public, like they do in business? What if we take that record to a venture capitalist, like they do in business? Now you got someone who is going to take it, give it a tune-up, pump it, pfooooom, and now you got an international record. That is the business that I’m in.”

At least the guy's honest.

Love Drake's verse on The Zone by The Weeknd.

Like I've said for the past few years, Drake is considered more a New Orleanian by New Orlneanians than New Orleanian Lil' Wayne.

I have to say I quite like the recent song sampling 'Love is Strange', obvious example of rappers' obsession with The Wire that it is.

Shit G-Man, Drake would kick Pitbull's arse in any OTF Musical Knockout. 4-1, I reckon and I'm being generous with the 1. Pitbull's just someone the record labels get in to add an edge to whoever they're trying to push this week. It's a very lucrative niche though - Ludacris is the undisputed king of it (though you could also make a case for Nate Dogg). Was listening to One Minute Man today for the first time in years - I'd totally forgotten that Luda does a rap on it. That's over a decade ago folks.

Yeah, Pitbull's modern shit, like the how-the-f-is-this-considered-worthy-of-radio-play intro to his own song "Give Me Everything," is mind-numbing. I mean atrocious beyond comprehension. (I remember a thread around the start of otf where the question was if Fat Man Scoop was taking in the piss. He's the modern Fat Man Scoop.)

Like Jon said, all he has to do is show up and do that horrific confident-swagga-rap-laugh and call it a day.

But like I also said, he still had some Culo-shaking club bangers almost a decade ago with Lil' Jon. What he built, this lazy horseshit bozo music, at least was built on a pretty solid foundation.

And G, you do realize Drake wrote Alicia's Unthinkable, or is that unthinkable ?

I wish he'd stick to writing then.

God man, Pitbull. He's always on the fucking music channels here, as Europeans all have utterly terrible taste in music, and the dance school across the road from us rehearsed a routine to one of his songs all last summer. But quite apart from the fact he produces banal shite, and the fact that his banal shite is everywhere - he's always rapping out the side of his mouth, like Alistair MacGowan's Rio Ferdinand impression. It's fucking annoying.
