Radio 6 keep playing "Les Plus Beaux" by François and the Atlas Moutains. It's beautiful:

Thanks for Les Plus Beaux, sweet tune.

I usually spend January hunting down oldies, I find that it's typically a barren month for new stuff, I'm still catching up on plenty of stuff I missed last year too

Still, here's a couple of dancey ones from me, and as ever, there may be an overlap back into 2011.

Todd Terje - Inspector Norse

Machinedrum - No Respect from SXLND EP

The first minute of that Machinedrum track promises big things, but takes cover in blandness from 1m 30s onwards. Unless a track has vocals, it really has to be something extraordinary to impress me.

"I wish you were red" by the awfully named Trailer Trash Traceys is pretty good: youtu.be/Zztx7FBMr04

Another Radio 6 favourite at the moment is "Back of your neck" by Howler: youtu.be/swg9X1LcXm8

The Trailer Trash Traceys album is phenomenal. I've been meaning to post about it but can't yet think of the words to do it justice.

I like Todd Terje. seem to remember him playing at The Key quite a few years back

That Machine drum tune sounded like a mini mini mix of late 90s house as played by Pete Tong (not necessarily a bad thing). Aside from the obvious Heller and Farley's Big Love chords, that vocal sample - what is that? sounds very familiar.

Some guy called Context MC started following me on twitter, not sure why, so i followed back. Anyway, turns out he is an up and coming 'MC'. Which initially turned me off instantly.

But he sent me the link to some of his stuff. It's actually alright. Reminded me of (a poppier) Tricky. Regardless of what I think of his music, I reckon he'll be getting a lot of attention this year.

Have a listen

@moolag I would listen, but the link's not working for me.

I like some of Terje's work, that one being one of his better tunes of recent times, the reverence he's held in some circles can be a bit OTT mind.
My favourite thing of his is a gentle edit of Chic's - I Want Your Love.

The Machinedrum track is part of a strong EP, worth getting hold of, or listening to the other tracks. Of course if you don't like that track there's a strong chance you wont like he others.

I didn't think too much of those other two tracks but "Les Plus Beaux" is still the pick of the pops for me, so far.

@atlantic - I liked it actually. Some of my favourite mixes have been from Pete Tong's essential mix show, great memories actually.

Here's that Context song. Ignore the bit where the dj says 'Ferne Cotton is a big fan' for obvious reasons

I heard this the other day and it's gorgeous. The album was 2011, but this track has been released for their 10th anniversary.
The Kills - The Last Goodbye

I was pointing that comment towards steveeeeeeeee's criticism. I wasn't really clear enough though.

I'll agree with you about Pete Tong in the 90's, he's sort of ended up with a bit of a cheesy rep hasn't he?

He used to drop a wide variety of dance music, he pushed all sorts, I was more into it through the early to mid 90's though. I won a couple of trainspotter comps on his show too. Shitty prizes though.

moolag, you need a savage linking tutorial!, - but I found it by looking at the link using the "quote" method.

This is what you were linking to yes? - s'alright. I have to pulled kicking and screaming to most British rap efforts tbh, maybe after a couple of listens it will grow on me.

I've listened to it three times now, gets better with every listening but I need to get over the fact that the bass-line is the same in almost every song.

Good tip. I have never taken much notice of The Kills. Should I?

Emika's eponymous album should have been one of the standards at the top of all the pundits' Best of 2011 charts, but wasn't. 3 Hours is off of that album and is aces.

Heard Francois & the Atlas Mountains on Marc Riley's 6 Music show and listened to the album. Very nice. Playing a few London dates soon, one of which is sold out, think they're supporting King Crimson at Shepherd's Bush and then another bar gig somewhere.

I've enjoyed the latest First Aid Kit album. Should have seen them at Rough Trade East last night but I was too knackered.

Okay, you steered me right on Mirrors, so I've just bought this on your say-so.

It is good. As steveeeeeeeee intimates there are a couple of tracks that groove on a Lynchian Twin Peaks twangy bass kinda vibe but apart from that it veers off into kosmiche, shoegaze and math rock territory with some crazy scales and skittering drum loops.

That name, though. Eugh.

I have the TTT album to listen to, but haven't quite got round to it yet.

Howler are another band getting a big write up at the moment with their album America Give Up. Have half listened to a few tracks from it and seems nothing out of the ordinary.

The Big Pink and Porcelain Raft albums promise interest, but highlights for me are the releases of a new Au EP and a new double album by the magnificent Crippled Black Phoenix.

Mump'old man, you're two for two. I'm on listen #3 on the way in this morning and it's grown on me fully.

I'm not crazy on the production, though. Some of the songs are too crowded with ideas and the vocals are waaaaay too far back on some of the tracks, but it's great.

A little bit Lynchian. A bit Siouxsie. A bit Best Coast.

Good reco.

Can't get enough of Brooklyn band Friends at the moment. Last year they came out with the excellent "I'm his girl", now they've released the equally brilliant "Friend Crush".

Can't wait for an album.

Leonard Cohen's "Show Me The Place" is my pick of 2012 so far.

And so we move to Nicki Minaj to Leonard Cohen in a short skip.

Just remembered that I also really like "Serpents" from the Sharon van Etton album "Tramp".

I thought the album was really boring on the first couple of listens, but it's really growing on me.
