TOPIC: Do you know what your F keys do?

posted 15-10-2012 20:22
I don't. Haven't got a clue. I've just cleaned my keyboard, and pressing F11 made my top toolbar disappear. Mercifully, pressing it again made it come back. So that's one thing I've learnt today.

How does one find out what all the others do except through some clearly potentially horrendous trial and error experiment? (It goes without saying I've long thrown out any printed material that came with the thing)

F5 refreshes the screen.

F2, in Windows Explorer, will let you rename a folder or file.

I'm not too sure about the rest.

A guide.

F11

Opens full screen mode in Windows Explorer and all browsers.

On MS Excel Shift + F11 adds a new sheet and Ctrl + F11 adds a new macro to the workbook.

Alt-F4 force closes a programme/window.

One of the most useful facts I learned on OTF is that the windows key plus p allow you to toggle between monitors/projectors.

Woah. Try Windows + Tab. (On Windows 7 anyway)

There's loads of Windows keys ones. The only ones I use regularly (other than just the Windows key to bring up the Start menu) are Windows+M to minimise all windows, and Windows+left or right cursor keys to reshape the current window to fill up the left or right half of the screen. The latter is great for working with multiple windows at the same time.

I like the ctrl and x for cut, ctrl and insert for copy, and ctrl z for undo. Shift insert for paste.

There must be others that I need to learn.

ctrl + alt + down arrow is good for befuddling the minds of friends/colleagues.

the most important function key is function key number one - the only one that could do with a real-life counterpart.

Ctrl-y is redo. I use Ctrl-v for paste; you don't have to move your hands as much.

I use Windows-D, which will maximise the windows again if you press it a second time.

Windows-Break brings up the System Properties dialog, which is often useful.

Ctrl-w will often, but not always, close the currently open file.

On a Mac I mostly use mouse or trackpad gestures, but something like Alt+F4 or Ctrl+F4 takes a screenshot.

On a Windows PC, my regulars:

Ctrl+A/X/C/V/Z/Y (A being select all and Y redo or repeat)
Ctrl+S usually saves, and Ctrl+P usually prints
Ctrl+L locks the desktop
Ctrl+Q quits a program, Ctrl+W closes a tab or window
Ctrl+N for a new tab, window or document

Which reminds me, on Windows:

PrtSc to take a screen capture
Alt-PrtSc to capture the active window

What does that do? I'm on Windows 7 but it seems to do the same thing as when I just press Tab.

It sends all your open windows into some kind of virtual rolodex

Are you sure you are doing the windows key + tab and not Ctrl tab?

Yes, I'm pressing the right keys but nothing's happening. I'm underwhelmed.

In Excel, F4 will toggle a highlighted formula between "fully fixed" e.g. $A$3 to "fully not fixed" e.g. A3

That's made your visit worthwhile eh?

I assume everyone is familiar with the Snipping Tool?

Trouble with the key of F is I can't really manage a B chord comfortably.

As you were.

Ah, man! Why did I just do that.

My laptop is now stuck like that. Even when I press ctrl + alt + up.
