TOPIC: Fancy a touch more depression?

posted 09-07-2012 14:37
So, if terrible news on here, the great British Summer, the Tory "Government" and Chelsea being European Champions haven't got you down yet, here's my little addition.

As you know, we lost my wife, Jules, to cancer last year. What I didn't mention on here at the time (I think) was that back in 2010, just as Jules got the bad news about her cancer spreading to her liver, my mom was diagnosed with throat cancer. This would have been about a week after Jules' news. You know its bad when even the nurse is crying in the room with you.

Anyway, my mom stayed in Worcester Royal for just under a month whilst they ran a whole host of tests, and she had to be fed through a "peg" as she could no longer swallow food. I have vivid memories of watching Nick Bleedin' Clegg the day after the General Election, sat at the end of my mom's bed (me, not Clegg).

They told her she only had about 2 months to live, which, a week later, was revised when we finally saw the Head of Oncology, who said that they wanted to start chemo and radio straight away. So, we had great family days when both my wife and mother were sat together having chemo and gossiping about me.

Anyway - the good news was that my mom's treatment was a real success, and she's had two years of being pretty much back to normal.

Last week, they confirmed that the tumour is back. She's having a stent put into her throat tomorrow, and then some low-level chemo. The oncologist has stated he thinks she has months left. She's 68. My dad, who's 71, was a wreck before this latest news, so I'm not sure about him either.

Anyway, just wanted to ask again for all your prayers / positivity / best wishes. Life really is a Sting sometimes, isn't it?

So sorry to read this Kim. A horrible smack in the face. Don't know what to say really, other than sincerest best wishes to you and your mum and loved ones. And keep in touch here as often as you feel inclined to.

Best wishes to yourself and your family, Kim. You're enduring something horrible right now but one day it will be better. I wish I could say more than that.

Ah shit, KC. All my best wishes to you of course, for what they're worth. Poor sods.

Ah man, that's just awful. I hope you can keep strong through this, and your family too.

Oh Jesus. Kim Casey (and forgive me for this, mate) , you're someone who often springs to mind when I drive through the West Country. Your updates on your poor wife's battle with cancer used to tear me apart.

I hope that having Casey Junior to think about works as a positive distraction through what must be a fucking awful time. I hope someone is looking out for you as well.

Thanks, Guys - why am I being associates with the West Country, by the way? Is Worcestershire part of the West Country to the rest of the UK?

KC Junior is being a rock for me, I still need to have the full sit down and chat with him about his Nan, though - putting it off until School finishes next week.

I've got a good circle of friends (believe it or not!), and a couple of Sisters-in-law who have been brilliant. Not even thought about meeting anyone "just for me," the idea still seems entirely alien. Unless, of course, Sarah Michelle Gellar comes a knocking. It's bound to happen one day.

Worcestershire? I'll make a note. My brain seems to have relocated you to Bristol for some reason.

Best wishes to your mom and family Kim, hopefully she will once again fully recover.

I really wouldn't have a clue where Worcestershire is. Sounds pretty west countryish, though.

Good to hear you have some decent support.
