Celtic were better, and Benfica worse, than I expected. A good, full-blooded game, although Celtic lacked that little bit of class to create clear chances.

Woah, AB2! There is no way the word "good" can possibly be used to describe that game. Annoyingly, Jorge Jesus panicked with the last minute loss of Luisão and decided to flood the midfield to ensure every defender would have cover. He was happy he got the draw, I was frustrated as yet again, JJ over-estimated the opposition and decided to play a completely unknown formation in European competition.

I doubt I'll see a worse game all season. Sky News's highlight this morning was the Celtic shot from inside their own half. To top it all off, I had to spend the last 20 minutes of the game trying to avoid getting my head kicked in because my Celtic-supporting mate told a bunch of drunk kids who kpet standing in front of the TV to "go down on your own errect penises, yer pricks" (italics note when English was spoken in a strong Glaswegian accent). Night to forget, basically.

No love for CFR's great win in Braga? The Braga that Steveeeeee thought would win the group? I still think CFR are going to be struggling to get the third place and the Europa League spot, but it's a fantastic result nonetheless.

Two goals scored by ex-Belenenses man, Rafael Bastos. The result mirrors Besiktas's victory at Braga, when another team filled with ex-Liga Portuguesa players found it relatively easy to beat a Portuguese league team.

Just the sight of seeing this kit reminds me of reading Shoot! and looking at pictures of Michel Platini.

Obviously, being a kit made by Kappa was a huge thing in the eighties, it was utterly Italian. But not having a badge on the kit is beautiful too, just two stars. It's like they're the generals of football.

Watching RTE's coverage of United last night reminded me that, while they are essentially rolling out the same old routine, they're still the best broadcaster from an analytical perspective. They always seem to assume a very negative, skeptical attitude towards the Premier League teams. Although it's not pure antagonism, it's more of a schoolmasterly "I expected more from you, Alex" attitude.

Although one thing does rankle. George Hamilton has been commenting on European matches at Old Trafford for the best part of two decades and at pretty much every one of these games he has, at some point, exclaimed, "And you have to say that, at the moment, it's the Galatasaray/Basel/Juve/Fenerbache/Milan/
Celtic/Benfica/Bayern/Marseille fans who are making most of the noise!!" He always delivers this in the exact same shocked tone as though it's only just occurred to him. This despite the fact that the home crowd at Old Trafford is notoriously quiet anyway and he utters some variation of this phrase on average four times a season.

it's all quite embarrassing really, i was just sat at my desk getting on with not doing any work when i happened to look at that juventus shirt. next thing you know, i'm on my knees with my hands clasped to my breast, a beatific grin on my face and a solitary tear rolling down my cheek.

that is how you do black and white stripes.

What would those two stars have represented?

Well, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the intensity, the competitiveness and the sense that something big was actually at stake, which isn't a feeling I've had while watching too many Celtic matches lately.

He went on a little too much about Nani being the one to take the penalty as well. It's fair enough if he believed that it shouldn't be him taking it, but no need to go on about it for the next 15 minutes.

Mourinho has now sued Marca for defamation over the article that AB2 posted on page 3 of this thread.

Pedro Proenca - the referee in charge of the Chelsea Juventus fixture - is the best in the business. He got 99% of his calls spot on and he plays a great advantage. He was excellent in the Champions league final and again last night. CLONE HIM UEFA!

Proenca made an unholy bollocks of the Inter-Barcelona first leg in 2010, however.

Saying something like that would get you beheaded in Portugal. Sporting fans would then take immense pleasure in using you decapitated head as a football.

He's a yes man on the international circuit, he's hideously biased towards Porto and Benfica domestically.

"What would those two stars have represented?"

I think each star represents 10 scudetto's.

What does he do when he's picked to referee Porto v Benfica? Call in sick?

ad hoc, all these years, I have many stories about Cluj.

My coaching friend has an uncle who nearly owned the team in the early 90s.

Scudetti. Or at the very least, 'scudettos'.

That is what they're for though, yes.

For a man who bases his persona on not caring what people think of him, he's incredibly thin-skinned isn't he?

CFR Cluj or U Cluj? In the early 90s CFR would have been complete nonentities, probably in the third of fourth tier

regardless, adhoc's coaching friend's uncle had a cluj.
