Some more twists and turns today I found interesting.
Charles Green issued a statement on Tuesday saying that all
Scottish football debts incurred by 'oldco' had now been paid in full by 'newco' (there are still debts to clubs outside Scotland that haven't been paid). There is no football creditor rule in Scotland so this is a bit dodgy but that's for Ticketus and HMRC to worry about for now. It was widely known that the SFA expected Rangers 'newco' to clear any debts owed to member clubs by the 'oldco', fair enough.
Then on Wednesday Dundee Utd issued a statement saying
they hadn't been paid by Rangers for an amount outstanding after a Scottish Cup tie last season. This fully contradicted Green's statement from the day before, and led the BBC Scottish sport website all day. There were more than a few questions asked of Green's honesty on Rangers messageboards too.
Today we discover that the
SPL agreed to pay this money to Dundee Utd. The SPL initially denied this, however STV have a
copy of the letter where they agree to it.
It transpires that the SPL have witheld Rangers prize money from last season's second place finish, over £2 million apparently, and so agreed to pay the £30,000 or so owed to Dundee Utd from that.
Quite how they could refuse to pay this money is unclear, Rangers were only in administration at the end of the season and so due any prize money surely. That money would have gone to the creditors of the 'oldco', not Green or the 'newco' it should be pointed out.
What is now being suggested is that the SPL told Rangers they would block any application to play football in Scotland at any level if they pursued this money. It also seems that it was agreed by the SPL clubs to split Rangers prize money between them. Well, what else would they do with it, no conflict of interest there.
For added irony it seems that the SPL are having 'cashflow issues' and so haven't actual paid this money out yet. Dundee Utd's statement has opened another can of worms which can be left in the corner with all the others as well as the maggots feeding on the decaying corpse of Scottish football.
