What.

The.

Fuck?

Wolves' Josef Venglos moment.

Five Danish titles in six seasons would suggest he is no mug. I'd say it was quite an intelligent appointment by Wolves when you consider they were going to pull Alan Curbishly in from the managerial merry-go-round that he had been riding for the past four years after they had ejected McCarthy.

People who watched him get Koln relegated might disagree.

Which is why I posted this news on the German thread.

Given the so-so calibre of the names who turned them down in February, they are probably wise to look beyond the English game. Whether Solebakken is the answer only time will tell, but my initial response would be cautious optimism.

I wouldn't hold Koeln's relegation against him too much, wasn't he the second or thrid coach they have had this season? Either way, it was hardly his squad and they were already in a mess when he arrived.
I remember watching a bit of HamKam when he guided them to the Norwegian top division. The were OK, and their ground looked tiny, so I sort of assumed he was doing very well to keep them at the level he did.

To be fair, Koln have been fannying around yo-yoing between the top two divisions for the last fifteen seasons, he's not the first manger who hasn't been able to polish that particular turd.

Janik, he joined Koeln near the end of last season.

Given the other names who were in the frame, appointing someone out of leftfield isn't such a bad idea. And I could see him maybe doing OK in the Premier League. But I just can't see him doing it in the Championship.

Did he? I though Soldo was making a pigs ear of things at the start of this season. Presumably that was longer ago than I remember...

You are way behind.

Soldo was 2009-10, then Schaefer, then Finke, then Solbakken.

List from kicker.

Solbakken was brought in to change Köln's fortunes. He started by playing a system his players couldn't follow, which says as much about the squad as you need to know.

I don't blame Solbakken for the relegation, and I think that Köln would have had a better chance of survival had he not been sacked. In fact, I'd have liked for him to get the chance to rebuild the team in the 2. Bundesliga.

It might say something about the quality of the players, but it's also a managerial / coaching problem - failing to recognise the limits of one's players and imposing a style of play which is beyond them. If, on the other hand, it's that the players couldn't be bothered I'd be more inclined to agree.

He did a tactical genius job against Barcelona with Copenhagen. Instead of launching the ball into free space, he had instructed the Copenhagen players to launch the ball straight at Puyol and Alves, and then run on to them. And then watch Puyol and Alves self destruct. It work all night long and Copenhagen nearly got the three points.

Only Victor Valdes' and Dani Alves' special red card immunity saved Barca.

edit: confuses alves and mascherano

Funny how languages work.

In Norwegian/Danish his name "Ståle" is quite close to the word for "steel" - which isn't an entirely misleading description of the man.

The word most commonly used to describe old bread somehow hasn't quite the same ring to it.

Given the fact that Johnson turned up for training hung over I am not surprised by this prick and the first thing Stale can do is get him the fuck out of Molineux

Looks like Johnson and Zubar need some diplomacy lessons. I don't think you can blame them too much for not having heard of a guy who has spent the vast majority of his time playing and coaching in Norway and Denmark. But a little voice in their head should have been telling them "You don't know who the fuck this guy is, but he is your next boss. So don't answer this question. It can't help."

Well from what I've read of the Wolves fans online they seem broadly in favour of him and there is a cautious optimism along with the dimwits at Wolves blog moaning about how hard done by Wolves fans have been this season when compared to what the likes of Blackburn, Portsmouth, Coventry and Leyton Orient have had to go through our "suffering" seems tame by comparison

With regards to his time at FC Köln, the consensus seems to be that he inherited a completely dysfunctional team and shouldn't be held fully responsible.

Interesting appointment; I hope he does well. He's shown his ability elsewhere.
