TOPIC: Preposterous polyester: new kits for 2012/13

Is she a fan of Lewisham Council or was that year's kit particularly stylish?

I believe that she's a proud daughter of the borough.

Though the kit wasn't bad at all for the time:

.... and the other thing about that Southampton kit is that they've lost the black. Like Sheffield United and Sunderland they're supposed to be red and white stripes with black shorts. They've done a Plymouth and lost their third colour.

I dunno what the world's coming to: some teams are adding irrelevant colours (we have a silver drop shadow under the blue hoops this season) and others are losing necessary ones. I'm not sure how much of this I can take. Thank heavens the CFL season — where nothing of any consequence has changed since the Pearson administration — starts today.

Wow, Spall! I remember having an 18-panel Spall football.

This picture sneaked out a couple of week's ago, I've just about managed to get over the depression and reproduce the terrible image:

Those aren't folds or creases!?!

If it makes you feel any better, the Southampton one is worse.

It's too bad they couldn't find a photographer as well.

Does the tiny white hat come with the shirt?

Whoop-di-do

Given what Newcastle and especially Southampton have managed, I quite happy with thoroughly underwhelming. If there isn't some sort of mini version of the Cardiff backlash going on in Southampton, then I'm going to think less of there fans. Dropping the stripes is a disgrace, they simply doesn't look like themselves in all-red.

They still have stripes... they're just very small. It's not the first time, they had this Hummel kit in the late-80s:

I remember when Hoddle was in charge they suggested a Monaco-style kit, but it got voted down.

Ha ha! Looks like a snow cone cup. Maybe I'll make my own.

Also during the early 80s they had a penguin style kit and then they had a red white shoulder with panels

Indeed. It's an incredibly fine-line between a wonderfully understated classic bit of design and a cheap-as-chips template, but the Stoke/Sunderland kits are at least serviceable.

It's pushing twenty years since Newcastle had a shirt that managed to have simple black and white stripes up and down the front and back.

I'll take this clean, long-sleeved one anytime.

I'm thinking of buying that classic Newcastle shirt because it's the best shirt ever.

What number/name should I get?

(this is a serious question, btw)

My NUFC knowledge is from a aways back, but I recommend to not put a name on it - go w/ the way things were back then - number needs to be between 2-11. #9 was Malcolm McDonald - a goal machine w/ major mutton chops.

Dunno if you'd get a red number over the stripes or if they'll put the number on a white cloth square over the stripes.

Just checked this thread after an age, those Soton, Millwall and Newcastle kits are repulsive and the former is a travesty. As if my team's disgraceful behaviour wasn't enough are all clubs trying to make me hate football?

As has been pointed out, Southampton have pissed about with their kit before, with the Hummel effort pictured above and the penguin effort of the Keegan era, but both those at least had a visible red-and-white element and black shorts.

The all-red kit just doesn't look like Southampton, and there are no all red kits in their history that would enable them to pass this off as a retro version. It's bizarre.

New Unterhaching shirt (obviously only of interest to me). I'm guessing this is the new bog-standard Adidas template. Quite like it.

How to get a striped shirt correct (if you take away the shoulder flashes - which aren't as bad for Diadora as they are for Fila or Carbrini)St Mirren home 12/13
