While we're waiting...this Wenger dude seems to be getting absurdly good press coming out of the combine. Has there been a consensus #1 pick like this since Freddy Adu?

Has MLS ever supplied a justification for calling the draft "Super"?

Does an Idiot's Guide to the Superdraft exist? If so, can someone point me in its direction? Thanks

They're a "major" league, of course the draft is super!

I have this feeling that the story is that there used to be a draft and a supplemental draft, and it was combining the two that made the draft "Super".

Presumably we aren't too far away from it being renamed (sorry, "rebranded") as the JC Penney MLS SuperDraft(TM) in Conjunction With Snapple, or some such? I mean ...

I just looked on MLS's website, and the "SuperDraft" is indeed "presented by Adidas." But you're on the right track, TEV. There are many opportunities for brand synergy the league has overlooked.

Fuck me, I was actually right about something:

wiki said:

The MLS SuperDraft is an annual event, taking place in January of each year, in which the Major League Soccer teams select players who have graduated from college or otherwise been signed by the league. The SuperDraft was first instituted in 2000, as a combination of the MLS College Draft, in which players having graduated from college were selected, and the MLS Supplemental Draft, in which all other players were chosen. The draft is divided into three rounds in which each club has a selection, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions, with the last placed team (or expansion teams) getting the first pick.

Although now that the supplemental draft has been separated out again (it takes place five days later this year), it all seems a bit shabby.

Indeed, but Adidas probably wouldn't want to present the MLS ShabbyDraft.

It will need to be something more edgy, like the X-Draft, or DudeSystem. Presented by Adidas. You know, more vibey, less constrictive.

Ha ha, X-Draft is all too plausible. Though maybe fear of being sued by the X Games will prevent it from happening.

Where the hell's Inca? If this thread goes on to page 2 without his blessing, it'll ruin the whole year.

Name of the draft previews so far: Hunter Jumper.

I think we can get jefe to bless the thread, AG. He's ordained.

Flying Spaghetti Monster save the congregation that thinks I have a pipeline to It.

Robbie Rogers signs for Leeds. Now there's just getting that pesky work permit.

Seattle adds a Danish midfielder, Chicago a Uruguayan striker.

The USOC rumors were right. 64 teams, 32 pro (i.e. every American professional team), 32 amateur. Starts in May, sorted geographically of course, anyone who wants to host can up to the quarters.

USLPro season starts April 6, Pittsburgh at Antigua.

Draft fever! Catch it and nap.

Incandenza is busy having his name curated on the "Words that could do with a break" thread. In the meantime "May all your drafty dudes abide."

First piece of good news for the year: super-midget Joao Plata is no longer just on loan, we've signed him to a "multi-year" deal.

Man, am I looking forward to March 7.

Is there such a thing as a "uni-year deal"? Probably not.

I think I may be channeling Edwin Newman here.
