I could post a lengthy reply of justification

No, you really couldn't. You could post a short reply saying "Apologies, fucked up there" and that is really. There is no justification really.

All season I've had to put up with over-cocky Saints fans saying "We're deffo going up, no problems" and I've had to point out that there's a long way to go, and not to count their chickens. Now that they're practically there, they're all bricking it and thinking they'll cock it up. What is wrong with these people?

(Sorry I couldn't get any reference to anal sex in there, but one of the Saints fans I know is a bit of an arsehole, if that helps).

Being scared of buggering up when you are practically, but actually not quite there is fairly normal, isn't it? Southmapton missing out is not an impossiblity.

Useless Soton! Fucking Boro!

2009 last day screw-up flashbacks ahoy.

Well we seem to specialise in draws at the moment, so we'll do our best, Harry...

It would be nice to get a top-half finish, though this has been a pretty good season for us as far as I'm concerned.

Reading champions. Not even Reading fans or I suspect players would have had that in their wildest dreams.

Anyone know much of the prospective Russian owner? He went to College not far from Reading. I'm in the odd situation of being happy with a BIT more money - those deals for Roberts and Kebe - but I hope to god he doesn't give it the "Reading's goal is the Champion's League."

I suspect Reading's relative proximity to London might gave played some part in his offer for the club. A Premier League club not too far up the M4 might for 25m might very well pay for itself in good PR for a Russian businessman.

Surely Southampton couldn't fail to beat already-relegated Coventry? West Ham could really put the pressure on if they win their next game 3-0 or so.

What can I say, I really didn't expect that. I'd be astonished if it makes any difference in the end as I fully expect both Cardiff and Southampton to be fine, but it's at least nice to go into the last day of the season with something to play for.

Well done, URRRzzz! Fully deserved for their absolutely irrepressible form since January.

The sort of life-affirming result that makes football so bloody hell, even though I had to leave ten minutes early to go to a surprise 50th party in Darlo - which made it even more nerve-shredding.

I was thinking that it's still impossible for us to get that sixth spot, until Harry reminded me about his lot's lust for choking...

I don't care now, this has still been a season of success, I was so sick after Tuesday, the group of us were still in the pub when Southampton scored and a couple were so close to stopping there, but I've fallen back in love with the Boro yet again.

One would think not.
Yesterdays results at the bottom have turned Coventry from being the right opposition and the wrong time, to be the right opposition at the perfect time. Coventry are already a poor team, as their league position shows. They will also now be dispirited. Presumably Andy Thorn will be starting to tell players that he is releasing them, so one might suppose guess a significant propotion of this seasons first would be absent, with some of the more promising youth team members given a run.
About the only way it could go wrong is if Coventry are suddenly rendered carefree and if Southampton become riddled with nerves.

Lets not forget that West Ham still have to win at Leicester. And Leicester are unpredictable. But a two or three goal West Ham win does put a great deal of pressure onto Southampton.

One question. What happens if these result come to pass? West Ham win their last two games 2-0, and Southmapton draw 0-0 with Coventry.
That would leave both with 86 points, 81 goals scored and 46 conceded. What is the next tie-breaker after those that are usually sufficient?

FL rules

9 Method of Determining League Positions

9.1 At the end of each Season the Club in each Division scoring the highest number of points shall be declared the Champion Club of that Division. Three points shall be awarded for each
League Match won. One point will be awarded to each Club for a drawn match. If two or more Clubs have scored the same number of points their position in the Division shall be determined on goal difference, that is to say, the difference between the total number of goals scored by and against a Club in League Matches in that Season, and the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club with the highest goal difference. If any two or more Clubs have scored the same number of points and have the same goal difference the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club having scored the most goals in League Matches in that Season.

9.2 If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored. If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs, then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding League Match or Matches under arrangements approved by the Board on a neutral ground. The net gate money after deducting the usual match expenses shall be equally divided between the two competing Clubs. Any Club staging such a play off match shall be entitled to charge as an expense against the receipts of the match 10% of the gross gate receipts after deduction of Value Added Tax. In the event of such a match being arranged by the Board to be played on the ground of a Club which is not a member of The League, then a similar charge as an expense against the receipts of the match shall be paid by The League who shall otherwise be responsible for the financial arrangements made with the Club staging the match. These provisions shall determine the ranking of Clubs in their respective Divisions.

Southampton beat West Ham at home and drew away. So, good news. Not that Southampton will fail to beat Coventry.

Ta. Thought that was the most likely, rather than something like games won. Has it ever got down to that, I wonder?

Side issue, but it always irks me that authorities include goals scored in rules such as this one:-
"If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored."

Presumably no-one has worked out that if, over a two match series, the goal differences are equal (i.e. 0), then the goals scored have to be as well? So including it as a tie-break is as pointless as including the number of tries scored by each team in those games.

Edit - scratch that. It clearly says two or more, doesn't it? I missed the 'or more'.

West Ham win at Leicester, but only 2-1. Keeps it alive until the final day, with a decent amount of pressure on Southampton. Which didn't look that likely a couple of weeks ago.

If Southampton draw 1-1 with Coventry, and West Ham beat Hull 3-0 (likewise 2-2,4-1 etc) then they will be level on points, goal difference and goals scored. What happens then? Is it head to head? If so then it will be Southampton with a win and a draw.
Of course if Southampton do draw with Coventry, then they will only have themselves to blame, as Cov are complete shite.
