10 February ~ Tonight's friendly between Argentina and Jamaica in Mar del Plata would be unremarkable were it not for the confusion that surrounded the announcement of the home squad last Thursday. Overlooking the fact that Estudiantes have Copa Libertadores commitments this week, national coach Diego Maradona called up four of the team's players for the game. Then 40 minutes after the home-based list went up on the Argentinian FA's website, it was replaced by a new one, with Maradona substituting the Estudiantes four with a quartet featuring Atlético Tucumán striker Juan Pablo Pereyra. The only problem was that Pereyra was unavailable for selection due to a broken nose. Having already drafted in seven new names, Maradona's inclusion of Racing Club's Claudio Bieler as his final replacement took the total number of players he has used during his 14-month reign to 102. Bewildered Argentinians can expect more from the unrepentant coach, who has warned that he'll take that figure up to 150 if need be. James Calder On the subject...
