Liverpool's 2018 World Cup bid

26 November 2009 ~ All day today the representatives of possible host cities for a potential 2018 World Cup in England have been descending on Wembley to submit their bids. But it doesn't seem that the current gloom on Merseyside has been lifted by the excitement of a bidding process. Their representatives, Roger Hunt and Trevor Steven, were formally waved off from Lime Street station by the Lord Mayor while Liverpool-based referee Chris Foy blew his whistle to signal the trains departure to London. Despite the joyful presence of animated footballing Liverbirds the endorsements of "famous bid backers" seem uncharacteristically downbeat and defensive. Both Steven Gerrard and David Moyes described the possibility of an English World Cup without Liverpool as "unthinkable" while according to Bill Kenwright: "It is utterly inconceivable that England could stage a World Cup without the city being a major venue." This may be true, but in the light of Everton's Kirkby stadium rejection and Liverpool's redevelopment saga, someone better get something sorted soon.
