There was a time when Sven-Göran Eriksson could do no wrong in the eyes of the Swedes. His achievements made them immensely proud. Svennis, as they prefer to call him, was proof that a quiet, timid man from Värmland could conquer the football world with traditional Swedish values such as democracy, humility and hard work. There was never a sense that he had betrayed the country by going to bed with England. Swedes saw themselves as the spotty, insecure teenager who had been forced to realise that they were never going to catch their big love – and neither did they deserve to. They were simply not good enough for him. But then something extraordinary happened. Someone better came along. In fact, two of them. Lars Lagerbäck and Tommy Söderberg were appointed national coaches and the pair turned Sweden into one of the best teams in Europe, qualifying for four consecutive tournaments, topping England’s group in the 2002 World Cup and coming within a penalty shootout of reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2004.
