... so get yourself down to Gainesville, Florida.

Personally, I preferred Terry Jones when he was with Monty Python.

I would say "the world would be a better place if we could just ignore all the extremist twats", but the problem is that they'll do anything to get a little bit of attention. ...Even to the point of blowing themselves/others up, destabilising international relations, etc, etc.

Like I said - twats!

I'm trying to work out how I would feel if a Muslim suicide bomber infiltrated the proceedings.

Ha, Bruno, it's awful, but my first thought upon hearing about this was a hope that al Qaeda might start targeting fundamentalist megachurches rather than secular targets in cities I love.

More soberly, though, this is of course an incredibly stupid stunt and will likely endanger American troops and this idiot's fellow Christians abroad, not to mention the likely discrimination and violence Muslims here in the U.S. will face as the religious right ratchets up its rhetoric.

(Sorry for the "Whicker Island" alliteration in that last sentence.)

'We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam.'

So he's aware that it is indeed only one element of Islam, then? And yet it's still the best thing to do, in his view: offend absolutely bloody all Muslims (and I'd like to think quite a lot of non-Muslims too) as a way of 'sending a clear message' to what he appears to accept himself is a minority.

Burning the writings of Sayyid Qutb would send a far clearer message (although it'd also offend a fair few Muslim intellectuals who don't even agree with Qutb, I suspect).

It's no use trying to meet these people with any logic, Sam.

While I'm glad that Petreus has come out against this, I'm a bit uneasy that this then becomes an issue of doing what's right "for the troops." This would be just as an offensive thing to do even if the almighty General Petreus didn't come out against it.

It is somewhat better than Bloomberg's garbled constitution-based waste of time. Why does everyone have to defend someone's constitutional right to do something, rather than simply pointing out they are way over their head and need to sort it out, sharpish.

Surely any fundamental Christian proclaiming "Islam is of the Devil" is tying himself up in so many canonical and philosophical knots it would be almost impossible to untie - admitting your own evil in temptation of others to hate, denying your own faith's insistence on tolerance, etc etc etc?

Of course, Sam ... you could direct a similar comment to any Muslim that might want to condemn the whole of the western world in the light of this stupid gesture.

Is there really not a law in the US against "incitement to hatred" or "behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace"? Can't they just stop this clown?

'We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam.'

Yes, the message presumably being 'we're shit crazy 'round the bend just like you'. Give them credit, though, they probably just discovered fire last week.

I'd dismiss them as just another clump of backward idiots that the world eventually throws up from time-to-time, but the repercussions their actions might engender provoke unease. That existence is sometimes dictated by fuckbuckets like them is a dismayingly infuriating puzzle.

You know it's bad when even Sarah Palin thinks it's nuts.

Small questions: where did they manage to get such a large consignment of Korans? Did they go into bookshops and buy up nearly all the copies to the consternation of sellers ("Jeez, heck, we're really into this Allah guy, he's one cool dude an' all."), or did they have someone nick them in transit?

I suspect it's a load of colouring-in books with the word 'Koran' written on the front in crayon.

You and Arnucci can fuck right off.

Unless, of course, you are criticising the current emo direction in which case you may have a point.

What's this Koran then?
