I bought a book off Amazon the other day. Second hand it was, cost a penny plus p&p, had an Oxfam sticker for 99p on it, the original price was 30p, although inside it was listed as 25p amongst the other titles by the same author. How can this be? It's the economics of the madhouse.

I think they are probably having a pretty serious effect on second hand bookshops too.

They are second hand bookshops.

OK, independent bookshops then.

sw2boro, a lot of charity shops don't have the resources to price things properly. If that was a regular Oxfam store (rather than a bookshop) they may have had a policy of minimum pricing all books at 99p.

Sorry Etienne, I was being a clown there really. Like I say, I bought it through Amazon marketplace or whatever they call it, not Oxfam as such. I imagine someone else bought it through Oxfam once then passed it on to my seller or perhaps it was unsold stock from Oxfam passed to my seller.

I don't think we have many charity bookshops in the US, but we do have charity book sales.

Here, the AAUW runs a fairly big one every year on campus. Just a big room with lots of tables with lots of books. The money goes to scholarships, etc. They accept donations from July to about March and the sale is in May, I think. I just donated a carload of books to them. You just drop them off in these big, bins which are conveniently located near where the local Interfaith Mission has their charity collections (mostly furniture). On the day I went, the bins were overflowing. So many boxes of books that people had stacked anywhichway they could to keep them under the overhang.

I've bought way too many books over the years, especially graphic novels (which AAUW accepts), so I'm in the book donating phase, not the book buying phase.
