Pine nuts are for sale in my local supermarket in the produce section and in the baking section. They're packaged in two different sizes: 75g and 225g (or whatever).

If the supermarket was helpful, it would provide a per-kg figure. This it does - but for only one of the items; there's no per-kg figure for the other. So which one represents the best value? Sorry, Mr Highly Valued Customer, did you forget to bring your FUCKING CALCULATOR?

This applies to other goods as well of course. Mulling over which strawberries to buy, and discovering only one had a per-kg price, I decided not to buy any, completely out of anger.

The next time I hear a representative of Tesco say "we're only responding to customer demand", I'm going to scream like a banshee.

Multiply the price of the 75g by three. Compare price to 225g bag.

Looks more like they're responding to shareholder demand. But shareholders shop at Tesco's too, so hey, they're right, in a way.

It's almost a rule that the smaller the package, the more you're paying per kg/ounce. The 'family size' usually offers the best value. Where I've noticed problems is in the club packs or when they bundle two of something together in cello-wrap. Often you're buying a shit-load of something and they actual savings is bupkes.

Ah, rumbled. My hypothetical amounts were chosen poorly. Let's say the 225g bag was 250g instead.

I'll bet there's an iPhone app for this. Really. If not, there's a free, million dollar idea.

There is. It's called a "calculator".

Unit pricing is mandatory in New York state and I've started to notice a trend that some markets will price the largest size at a higher price per unit than the immediately smaller size, perhaps to take advantage of rubes like WOM.

Smaller sizes on sale are also often cheaper per unit than larger sizes that are not.

I don't know who added Tabasco to your cream of wheat, pop, but you're on fire this week.

No, the app would let you input two prices, two quantities and tell you the better 'buy'. With a calculator, it's two separate equations. It's a winner I tells ya.

And we prefer to call ourselves 'the urban naive'.

I was nearly caught by this on Saturday. I put an 8 pack of ginger beer in my trolley (£3) only to notice that single cans were beign sold for 3 for £1.

The thing that realyl annoys me is the way supermarkets sell fruit. Sainburys will sell a punnet of Greengages for £4 for one week and then sell them for 'half price' the rest of the summer.

Even worse in my eyes is when they'll sell something they source all year round (cherries or strawberries say) for half price during the season when they are coming from Spain or the Uk as opposed to shipping them from Chile. It isn't half price, you're selling two different things.

WOM, "rube" is a term of endearment in our household.

Sharp practice when it comes to sales/specials is rife down here. I've seen stores with large displays of products that are actually marked up from their regular price.

I’ve noticed someone behaving like an ursus with a sore head too – does somebody need a (bear) hug?

I understand you’ve been in NYC recently ua – I suspect this explains things as you’ve had to readapt, no doubt letting out a few real Bronx cheers, too.

My local supermarket has bread for sale at £1 a loaf, or on a deal of 2 for £2. Also spotted recently was a 200g jar of Peanut Butter on sale for ~£1.69, with a 440g jar of the same brand on the shelf next to it going for ~£1.65. Niether item was on offer...

They haven't quite got the idea of confusing pricing straight, have they?

I wouldn't like pine nuts.

I'm not a big fan of pine nuts. I hate the tendency of sandwich shop chains like Pret-a-Manger to put them in everything.

I still get sucked in by those signs that say "2 for $3", like on potato chips. I put two bags in the cart. Mrs WOM will say "you know you can buy one and get it for $1.50" and I stare at her like a ....rube...if you will.

White today. It was pink yesterday to offset the grey suit in a rather fetching manner.

It actually doesn't work this way at a lot of stores down here. You have to buy in volume in order to get the discount.
