This is fantastic. I'm not usually comfortable with mobs. I'd have liked to seen the event go ahead but with a string of people taking their book up to him and tearing it up, or asking him to sign it "Liar" or something.

But this is fantastic.

One man's "mob" is another man's "movement" or mere "gathering". I'm always interested in how people delineate different views and forms of collective action.

I'm trying to use the word neutrally as a group who stops something happening, whether I like them or not. Usually, I think it's better to have the thing go ahead with protests. I reckon some film of a big crowd shouting at Blair might have been perfect for his North American admirers.

On the other hand, I like the idea of people getting together and stopping things. I can see a particular case for beating the BNP on the streets.

I wasn't particularly having a go at you, I'm just interested in how people interpret mass gatherings of people in different contexts. The Left can do it too - the Tea Party, or people protesting against paedos on a council estate, are "a mob" but were the miners or the people on the streets of Greece.

Anyway, I agree that generally protests going ahead is better than silence - either through state bans or people withdrawing. It's still kinda funny that Blair can't go anywhere unmolested though.

I didn't take it as having a go at me.

And it's indeed very funny.

The book appears to have been meticulously researched and edited.
