Great idea. Mine's certainly a little biased, and I'm not sure how balanced it is, but fuck it. It's 4:45am as well, so be gentle...

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)

Gary Neville (Man Utd)
Rio Ferdinand (Man Utd)
Carles Puyol (Barcelona)
Denis Irwin (Man Utd)

Paul Scholes (Man Utd)
Javier Mascherano (River Plate)
Andrés Iniesta (Barcelona)

Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

Ruud van Nistelrooy (Man Utd)
Salvador Cabañas (Club América)

With spots on the bench for Van der Sar (Man Utd), Xavi, Ryan Giggs (Man Utd), Diego (Werder Bremen), Maniche (Porto), Sami Hyypia (Liverpool) and Roy Keane (Man Utd).

The bench needs an extra defender and another forward, of course, but I've limited myself to seven...

Having been reminded on re-reading Bryan's opener that I have in fact seen Stam live, I'm going to put him in alongside Rio, and move Puyol to the bench in place of Maniche.

The surfeit of playmakers is also leading me to suspect I can afford to drop Diego out of the bench and replace him with that missing forward, who is going to be Didier Drogba (I have seen Barcelona live twice, and sadly Samuel Eto'o was injured on both occasions, so I can't include him).

I've changed Jaap Stam (PSV) to Jaap Stam (Ajax). Just because.

I really wanted Edgar Davids (Ajax) in the team. He's not as good as Roy Keane in the centre, but he's a much better all round player than Overmars and can play on the left. But Overmars is a freakishly good out and out left winger. Depends on what you want, I guess.

Really tough as I started going to football in 1969 but I'll go for:

Banks (Stoke)

McGrain (Celtic)
Moore (West Ham)
McGrath (Villa)
Pearce (Forest)

Johnstone (Celtic)
Souness (Liverpool)
Keane (Man Utd)
Cruyff (Barcelona)

Best (Man Utd)
Pele (Santos)

Too many Scottish players but Jimmy Johnstone made a real impression on me when I was 5, probably because we were the same size.

Couldn't think of a left back off the top of my head so I almost went for Carboni of Valencia as I really enjoyed watching him kicking Lee Bowyer's arse all over the pitch.

I set a very attack-minded 4-1-4-1:

Lehmann (Arsenal)

Lizarazu(France)
Stam (Man U)
Thuram (France)
Alves (Sevilla)

Vieira (Arsenal)

Zidane (France/Real Madrid)
CRonaldo (Real Madrid)
Scholes (ManU)
Figo (Real Madrid)

Henry (Arsenal/France/NYRB)

On the bench:

Roy Keane, Fabregas, Blanc, Batistuta (Fiorentina-era), Cole, Casillas. And though it makes the bench lopsided, my seventh is DeRosario, just 'cause.

This is friggin' impossible.

Are we basing the selection on their form in the matches we saw, or overall performance? Because Pele and Platini won't make it if the latter (though Beckenbauer and Cruyff will, and Best might).

I go by the reputation of players I've seen. If I didn't, then CRonaldo and van Nistelrooy would have no place in this side, and I don't remember whether Giresse played well when I saw him.

Iker Casillas (Spain)

Manfred Kaltz (Hamburg)
Franz Beckenbauer (Hamburg)
Paul McGrath (Man Utd)
Andreas Brehme (Germany) (or Lizarazu, I can't decide)

Pierre Littbarski (1.FC Köln)
Bryan Robson (Man Utd)
Alain Giresse (Bordeaux)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Ruud van Nistelrooy (PSV Eindhoven)
Rudi Völler (Germany/Werder)

Coach: Rinus Michels

This is really hard. But I'd have to go with a forward trio of Keegan, Waddle and Beardsley, with Diego Maradona on the bench.

I also saw Pele and Moore well past their best (George Best didn't turn up) playing and losing 4-0 to Italy in the 1976 Bicenntennial tournament for an outfit called Team America.

Fuck Yeah.

Bryan, man, the players don't live at the stadium. I used to think the teachers slept in cupboards at school, but that was when I was 5 years old.

I'm with GMan on the definitions here. If I had to go just on the performances I've seen, I'd have to include Dwight Yorke, and that's not going to happen.

This one is too tough because ;

A) where do you start?!

B) it requires you largely to appreciate opposing players and I think I am too partisan to have done that. It seems a bit starfuckery.

Don't do it then. Ignore the thread.

Alternatively
A) You start with the teams you support - Wales and Cardiff. You could always do just a Wales/Cardiff one that you have seen live

B) You are actually quite good and seeing where players that Cardiff and Wales have played against have played a role in beating us.

My only problem is that most of them have been against Wales and you have to take into account that we may have been pretty shit (especially the Dutch players)

Exactly. I have to think really hard to remember any outstanding performances against us. Though I'm sure there were some. Thinking really hard about it Teddy Sheringham ripped us apart once, but Lampard was woeful against us I believe.

In fact I'm struggling to remember any great performances by our players, I just remember whether the team played well or not. And great goals too. I'm disappointed in myself that I can't remember these things.
